Take Five with Nancy!

Having spent a life moving around, Nancy’s good at being at home wherever she is.

At various times in her life, Nancy called Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, Indiana and Texas, home. Her memories are all with her, many captured in her beautiful things. From her pictures to her dresser and especially the Ohio University stool her brother-in-law made for her; everything has a story. Her things all hold special places in her heart.

Surrounded by mementos, looking out onto her patio watching an oriole on her birdfeeder, she’s made her apartment at American House Spring Lake cozy and comfortable.

Nancy’s daughter found the 2-bedroom apartment and brought her to look at it. Overwhelmed, Nancy said, “I can have this?” It was love at first sight.

“There are a lot of lovely senior housing communities around, but they don’t have what this has,” said Nancy. “It’s home.”

Nancy likes activities and mentions the jigsaw puzzle that is always in progress for anyone who cares to sit down. But her go-to pleasure? Aa fun day of shopping. “There is always something to do and someone to do it with.”

“Just about everybody you meet here is friendly,” Nancy said. Her daughter wants her to walk more. Her solution for that, “We do laps in the hallways, and you meet people. I socialize with people.”

By “people” Nancy means everyone. “The guys in the kitchen are a real stitch, they’re a lot of fun,” she laughs. “They do really cool stuff, like Family Nights on Wednesdays,” adding with a wink, “They serve adult beverages which is very nice!”

When asked for words of wisdom, her heart reaches back to her husband Jim who passed, and her advice is simple: don’t procrastinate, “Enjoy your life now, don’t put things in your back pocket for later. Jim and I went on cruises, went to Cape Cod, Yellowstone, we did it all. And we could talk about it together for years after,” she said. “Don’t wait until tomorrow, do things now.”
