Proof That Friendship Never Retires.
Carol Schraeger, 81, and Carol Petersen, 92, have built a friendship that has gone from the classroom to the community. Affectionately known as “The Carols” at American House Village of Rochester, the women have been pals from their days in the Birmingham Public Schools to their current status as the dynamic duo of assisted living. One is rarely seen without the other—they even park their cars next to each other.
Their friendship began in the ‘80s when Carol S., then a new principal, hired Carol P. as a teacher. “We just clicked right at the beginning,” she recalled. With nine children of her own, Carol P. was used to having children around, “I loved the kids at school. It was just like I was plunked down in the perfect spot for me.” Decades later, fate brought them back together at American House, where they now share laughs about the old days and create new stories with their beloved pets—Carol S. has a Yorkie named Toby, and Owen is Carol P.’s cat.
Over the years, The Carols have built more than friendship. They, and a group of residents, got the idea to turn puzzles into art, which ultimately became a charitable project. Calling themselves the “Piece Makers”—a play on puzzle pieces—the group sold the art to raise funds for local seniors in need. With the onset of the pandemic, some of the Piece Makers sequestered themselves during lockdown, pulled out sewing machines and got to work making masks. “We were able to pay it forward and contribute to keeping our community healthy,” said Carol P. “It’s important to remember we’re all in this together.”
Whether they’re reminiscing or doing good works to benefit others, one thing’s clear, The Carols have turned life into a delightful adventure. Carol S. sums it up perfectly, “We’re seniors living in a dormitory!” As good friends supporting and enjoying time with each other, it sure seems like it.
