Take Five with Mary!
Helping people is what Mary does. It is, in fact, what she was trained to do.
The American House Spring Lake resident often holds the door, pulls out a chair or grabs a napkin in the dining room for someone.
“I’m always aware of people in need, I feel compelled to help,” Mary says with a chuckle. But it comes naturally, “I spent most of my life in nursing and teaching.”
With so many healthcare workers stationed overseas at the end of WWII, our country was in need of nurses and the government was paying for training. Mary made the most of the situation and spent three years in nursing school in Grand Rapids, paid for by Uncle Sam.
“I worked in the hospital in Grand Haven for a long time,” said Mary.
She also taught a nursing aide class for high school students. The students did class lessons then they did care onsite patient care in the hospital. “These girls went to the hospital and did patient care; it was great training. I loved it, the program really made a difference for the girls.”
After the war, Mary’s boyfriend’s service ended, he returned to the states, and they married. A son and daughter soon followed. Her family remains close by to this day, with children and grandchildren in Grand Rapids or Grand Haven.
At 98 years old, Mary craves her independence. In assisted living now with a knee issue, she no longer drives. “They took my license away. It made me mad, but I’ll tell you what I did…I bought a scooter!” Mary doesn’t stop moving!
“I know I can’t be home, and this is the best place for me, because of things that go along with the aging process. But I get out a lot,” said Mary. She feels lucky to have family nearby, and they enjoy day trips and overnights together.
Along with her family and friends in the area, Mary has pals in the community. She plays games and participates in bus outings with fellow residents, but mostly enjoys walking outside.
“I was in another place, but they had nothing planned for the residents,” said Mary. “Here, we have a great activity leader. She’s here early in the morning, running around, getting stuff ready and she really goes overboard in doing her job … the programming is great!”
After almost 10 decades, Mary’s drive to help others has become part of who she is, “You make your own life, do good work, enjoy your freedom and help people. It’s what it’s all about.”
