Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month!

From September 15 through October 15, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration of the histories and cultures of American citizens with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

Commemorations take place throughout the month to honor our proud Hispanics, including those who have built and defended our nation. The United States military honors the contributions of Hispanic soldiers and veterans and celebrates the diverse and inclusive environment of the U.S. Armed Forces. Observances celebrating rich Hispanic culture include music and film festivals, dance and art expositions, discussions and more.

At American House, we share in this month of appreciation by honoring the Hispanic team members in our company. One team member gave some thoughtful insight into what the holiday means to her.

Meet Maribel!

Maribel Ortiz, the Life Enrichment Director at American House Coconut Point, proudly celebrates her Puerto Rican heritage during National Hispanic Heritage Month. Born in Connecticut and raised in Florida, her family roots trace back to Puerto Rico, where vibrant traditions and food play a central role in her life.

Maribel honors her culture at work by teaching residents Spanish phrases and incorporating Latin music into her popular Zumba classes. For National Hispanic Heritage Month, she and her colleagues collaborate to showcase traditional dishes from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico and Peru, educating residents on the rich cultural diversity within the Hispanic community.

For Maribel, this month is about celebrating the values, food and music that define her heritage and sharing that pride with others. She believes in the power of bringing joy and cultural awareness to those around her, especially through her role at American House, where she enriches the lives of residents every day.
