Take Five with Lorraine!
In 90 years, Lorraine has only lived in three places.
There was the first house in Holland, about a mile north of 8th street. Then, the house on an acre where she and her husband spent their life north of the city. And then, American House Holland.
While Lorraine didn’t tread very far, she’s found a lot of happiness in the three places she’s called home.
“Things just always seemed to work out,” said Lorraine. Her mother took wonderful care of Lorraine and her three siblings. “She cleaned houses and gave me a happy childhood.,” said Lorraine. Eventually, her mother remarried and enjoyed a wonderful life.
When she was 20 years old, Lorraine met and fell in love with a farm boy. They bought an acre of land, built a home, had a family and made a life for themselves in North Holland. “Now my grandson and his three sons live there, which is nice for them and for me. I see them enjoying our family home, we do things and go places. It’s perfect!”
After a bout of Coronavirus in 2021, it was time to move. She always knew she wanted to be at American House Holland. “I had a high school friend here who I visited often and I really liked it here.” My kids made all the arrangements, and when I was feeling better they helped me move in,” she said. “I’ve never been sorry.”
She enjoys meeting new people. “I encourage new residents to get involved, try to be helpful and make them feel good about this place,” she said. She tells them how much she’s enjoyed her two and a half years here. “I wouldn’t know what to say against it. People say, do you really like it there? And I say, no, I love it!”
With all the opportunities for activities and events, Lorraine stays busy. A recent all-day outing to Shipshewana for a music festival and dinner underscores how much she enjoys living at American House. “When I got home, I wasn’t even tired. I had so much fun!”
“It’s so perfect, I couldn’t have a simpler life. I just enjoy every part of it! I recommend it to everyone.”
