Take Five with Flo!

Flo and her husband, Dale, had a plan. With comfort and happiness in mind, they decided Flo would become an American House Jenison resident should she find herself on her own. They loved the campus and it was what they both wanted. Around 2019, Flo moved into The Cottages, lovely Independent Living apartments. There she made friends, had a car and enjoyed jaunts out shopping and to local restaurants.

Her needs changed, and Flo is now in Assisted Living in the Beechwood apartments. With the move, her circle of friends got even bigger. Her pals from The Cottages still get together for cards and she’s made new friends who share a love of Wii Bowling. In fact, she and her new group have become known as the “crazy table” in the dining room. “Boy, do we have fun,” she said. Flo stays busy and joins in on activities and outings. Her apartment, filled with her vintage teddy bear collection, overlooks a beautiful pond where she enjoys watching the baby ducks and the occasional deer.

With her family out of state, not only do they have peace-of-mind that Flo is well-cared for, they also know she’s happy. “It’s so comforting to my kids, knowing I’m being taken good care of,” she said.

With a philosophical outlook on her life, Flo knows she has more needs now and is very pleased with the care she receives. Her caregiver, Julie, makes life better. “She comes in every day at six o’clock in the morning and puts my socks on!” She acknowledges, “If I wasn’t somewhere like this, I wouldn’t have that. This place does it all!”

Flo has carved out a nice life for herself at American House Jenison and, as her husband had planned, she feels secure and comfortable. “It’s so well organized, the meals and everything,” she said. “They take good care of me here, and I guess I can’t find anything wrong with it!”

In fact, the plan she and Dale made those many years ago is working out spectacularly. If Flo had one piece of advice for someone considering their future, she says, “Make a plan!” Solid advice from someone who knows.

“I’m in good health, so I hope I have quite a few good years left at American House, because we really have fun!”
