Take Five with Ellie!

At 81 years old, Ellie’s mischievous smile still sparkles, reminiscent of the girl who grew up on a farm in West Michigan. Sweet young Ellie, who was more likely to have heart-to-hearts with her horses than ride them.

At American House Holland, Ellie is still a talker, only now she has a whole community to chat with!

Her given name is Eleanor, but “My friends call me Ellie!” And friends she has aplenty! Socializing is one of her favorite things to do. “I used to get the mail and deliver it. I met a lot of people that way! They won’t let me anymore,” she laughs. But sometimes she still sneaks in!

More than talking, Ellie is there to help whenever needed. “I like to help the other residents. I’ll even get their napkins for them in the dining room. I visit friends and chat.”

Young at heart, Ellie likes to stay busy. “I have my own office and do my own banking … and I wash my snack dishes.” While she enjoys her meals in the dining room, Ellie loves a good evening snack. “Gotta have my snacks!” Ice cream, that’s her go-to! “Sometimes I put bananas on it and chocolate syrup,” she laughs.

While Ellie is very independent, being in assisted living has its benefits. “The people that take care of us are so kind. I have a button I wear, and if I need them, I push it and they come.”

“I’ve had a great life,” Ellie said. It’s clear she’s made that happen. She wanted to get married when she was 18; she did. She wanted a lot of boys; she gave birth to three. She’s happy at American House, a place where she always knew she wanted to live.

When she talks about her life, she has the same twinkle in her eye as when she talks about chocolate syrup and horses. Her philosophy, “You feel better if you do what you want to do.” Great advice, Ellie!
